Listen to Learn
A pocket guide for staying curious when a conversation becomes difficult.
Before I respond
- Am I listening to learn or listening to answer?
- Am I building a defense while this person is still talking?
- What am I assuming this person knows?
- What experience may have shaped this view?
- Can I explain the position in words the speaker would accept?
Pause · Hear · Ask · Reflect
Pause: Notice the urge to rehearse.
Hear: Find the meaning beneath the words.
Ask: Replace assumptions with a sincere question.
Reflect: Offer the meaning back and accept correction.
Say this
- “Help me understand what you mean by that.”
- “What experience led you to that conclusion?”
- “What do you most want me to understand?”
- “Let me make sure I heard you correctly.”
- “Have I represented your view fairly?”
- “What am I missing?”
Pause before saying
- Everyone knows...
- Obviously...
- You always... or You never...
- How could anyone believe that?
- So what you are really saying is...
- An immediate Yes, but...
